9 Foods That Help Fight Belly Fat

9 Foods That Help Fight Belly Fat

Dream of getting rid of that gut? Here are nine foods that help trim belly fat when you add them to your diet.

By RealAge

Black Beans

All legumes are full of protein and fiber — two well-known appetite crushers. And thanks to their dark color, black beans are also one of the highest in flavonoids of all the beans. And research shows that flavonoids may thwart the storage of excess tummy fat.

Pears

Fresh pears are so low in calories and high in fiber, you could eat one before every meal and still lose weight. But even better, pears are loaded with catechins and flavonols — two antioxidants that appeared to hinder the storage of belly fat in a 14-year study.

Popcorn

Go ahead. Pop up a bowl. Sans the butter and salt, popcorn is a real gut whittler. Why? Because popcorn is a whole grain — and a study revealed that people who ate lots of whole grains had smaller middles compared with folks who ate mostly refined grains. So while you’re waiting for yours to pop, clear all the white rice, pasta, and bread out of your cupboards.

Cold Potatoes

Hate having to pass on the potatoes for the sake of your pants size? Well, you may not have to. Just eat them cold — as in vinegar potato salad. If you chill potatoes overnight, they form something called resistant starch crystals — a constituent of fiber that triggers the production of two hunger-halting hormones, according to research. And resistant starch helps the body incinerate more fat for fuel while making less fat available to stash away in fat cells.

Peanuts

Hard to believe that rich-tasting, calorie-packed peanuts could help you lose weight. But they just might. Seems the healthy fats in peanuts are burned more readily than the less-healthy fats found in cookies, chips, and creamy desserts. So make them your snack of choice.

Sunflower Seeds

Toss ’em into soups and salads, mix them into yogurt, or sprinkle them onto sandwiches for nutty crunch. Plus, sunflower seeds (unsalted, please) are high in monounsaturated fat — a healthful type of fat that appeared to inhibit waist widening in a study of overweight people.

Tea

Seems the white version of this brew may be a veritable fat blaster. When human fat cells were treated with white tea extract in a lab study, the cells absorbed about 70% less fat than the untreated cells did. And those same tea compounds also triggered the breakdown of fat in existing cells.

Apple Cider Vinegar

As a fish condiment and tang-provider for sauces and salad dressings, nothing beats apple cider vinegar. But here’s a big bonus: Apple cider vinegar also has a compound called acetic acid, which turbocharges the body’s ability to burn fat and simultaneously hinders fat storage.

Safflower Oil

This popular salad dressing ingredient could be a big boon to your belly-flattening efforts, thanks to the omega-6 fatty acid called linoleic acid. It may rev up metabolism. And in a study, just a couple of tablespoons a day appeared to encourage belly fat to take a hike.

An Active Approach

Eating foods that seem to target belly fat is just a starter strategy for getting rid of that gut. You’ll see better, faster results if you exercise, too. In fact, just being more active in general helps. In one study of office workers, just standing up more often helped melt 1½ inches from people’s waists. It doesn’t take much — just a few extra hours a week of exercise may produce results.

Stress Less

Reducing stress may help with the battle of the bulge, too. Chronic stress boosts your blood levels of cortisol — the “fight or flight” hormone. And cortisol encourages belly fat in two ways:

  • It triggers cravings for sugary, high-fat comfort foods.
  • It signals the body to store more fat in your abdomen.

Introducing…Nutritionist, Kelly Cornell

Introducing…Nutritionist, Kelly Cornell

In December of 2010 I found mySELF openly receiving a plethora of opportunities for free nutritional consultations. Providing nutritional guidance mySELF, as part of the WHOLEistic Wisdom and Wellness enLIGHTenment Guidance I so DO, for our Angel Partners [clients], I felt a bit greedy in taking up anyONE on such an offer until….

It dawned on me, we are going to BE opening up our virtual store fronts and having a professional dedicated full time to nutritional consulting/coaching as ONE of the services available, a PURRRRfect fit to that which we ALLready have “in stock” 😉 Including of course, the fabYOUlous Nutritional Program Package I have prepared for the BEnefit of ALL of WE 😉 Sooooo exciting, indeed!

And with that inspiration, I was off upon my nutritional consultant journey. I should make mention, as it IS Very Important to note, regardless of yOUR level of KNOWledge, experience, Awareness, or professionalism, we ALL, ALLways have something to learn from anyONE we come into contact with, consciously aware thereto or not, and I knew without a doubt, that this journey would definitely BE an enLIGHTening ONE for me. I set up appointments with the nutritionists I found most appealing and then waited excitedly for the experience itSELF. They were ALL set up withIN a week of each other so the comparative analysis was much easier, as my experience with each, remained fresh withIN my Mind.

The first nutritionist I spoke with was sweet, kind and very focused on “making the sale”.

Obviously, the gift of a free consult on the part of the nutritionists was to give the potential client an opportunity to “try them out” and hopeFully CHOOSE to continue their nutritional journey with them on a more regular basis, going from potential to actual client, or “Angel Partners” as we prefer here at Sanctuaire Soul’s Sanctuary…..and so humbled the honour to journey are we, with each of our Angel Partners!

The second nutritionist I spoke with was also, sweet and kind, AND…more giving of her self, time and nutritional information than the first. She also seemed to BE more connected and experienced within her industry, having some well KNOWn associations she sited and used herSELF. Like I said earlier, we ALL have something to learn, ALLways, and those of us whom offer professional services such as nutritional consultation or WHOLEistic enLIGHTenment Guidance have themselves guides and consultants to assist, uplift, empower and enLIGHTen them ☺ We ALL deserve LOVing care and assistance in our lives, n’est ce pas.

Then it was time for my third and final appointment with holistic nutritionist, Kelly Cornell, and I was just FLOORED, she was that AMAZING!

At the end of my phone calls with the first two nutritionists I thanked them sincerely for their energy in providing this opportunity to me for the free consult, and told them each that I would ponder upon the package offerings to journey further with them.

I never even made it to package offerings with Kelly!!

First, she was sooooooo informative, I mean from BEginning to end, she wasted no time in getting right down to MY issues, and providing me as much information, resources and tools as she could, which she KNEW would BE of assistance to me….and she KNEW A LOT! The information just kept streaming and streaming in, Kelly even went so far as to extend the information provided from her own professional advise to specific websites of others, where I could go and get actual products that would BE of assistance.

Not to say the other two did NOT provide information, they did, but it was sooooooo limited – one more than the other, and came only after they had taken most of the time allotted to tell me ALL about themselves.

Second, AWARE this woman IS, like WOW! Okay, so understand, she IS talking to ME…..and WE ALL KNOW how I AM…..very esoteric, spent the last 20 years of my life dedicated ALLmost exclusively to Ontological pursuits for the BEnefit of ALL of WE, extremely conscious of & a professional guideLight regarding WHOLEistic Wellness- physical, mental, spiritual, AND not only was she not intimidated or put off by me, she was RIGHT ON PAR!! I mean she was able to talk “my lingo” and more over fully comprehends the intricately interwoven relationship between the physical and the esoteric, the seen and the unseen, the body, mind and consciousness. Did I mention, Kelly IS a HOLISTIC Nutritional Coach! Ya babay, that’s what I AM talk’n about!!!

ALL I’m think’n in my head as the conversation continues IS, “I’ve struck Gold!!! This woman IS AMAZING!!!”

I simply could NOT resist, and BEfore we ever got to the stage of “if YOU are interested in…..” it was ME asking Kelly, “if YOU are interested in……”, I mean really when ya strike gold, DO YOU wait around contemplating whether or NOT YOU should take it???!!!!

I was BEyond BLISSed by Kelly’s very receptive response ☺

We exchanged more information for each of us to go and peruse, and BEcome that much more acquainted and familiar with each other and the creatives [work] we DO. We set up an appointment to confirm what we both ALLready knew! This was gonna BE a most ONEderFull relationship for each of WE for the BEnefit of ALL of YOU!

Whooohoooo

Ya simply don’t get much better than that, NOW DO ya??!!!

Okay so, obviously, can YOU tell???, I’m quite excited, and though our store IS in pre-construction, I simply couldn’t wait to introduce YOU to Kelly and ALL the Amazing programs and packages she has available to assist YOU to BE the Healthiest YOU, YOU can BE!

The first place ya wanna visit IS of course, Kelly’s Nutritional Wellness website.

Then…..we can really get the party started on our journey to LOVing the body we are in and having the Body we LOVE with Kelly’s:

One on One Coaching, for those seeking a very personal, in-depth, professional, informed, & KNOWledgable touch from a very fabYOUlous nutritionist.

Group Weight Loss Coaching for those who enJOY journeying in the company of others upon similar pathways, and sharing withIN the successes of ONE another together.

Get Your Dream Body in 90 Days or Less Program, for those seeking a pre-defined very expedient route to attaining yOUR Dream Body.

and last but definitely not least,

16 weeks to a slimmer YOU Program, for those seeking to lose weight at a healthy rate within a well supported environment, garnering all the tips, tools and resources required to ensure enduring results for a life time.

Please DO come back here and let me & ALL of WE KNOW, how fabYOUlous yOUR experience with Kelly IS. We look forward to hearing from YOU and thank YOU for sharing withIN yOUR experience of BEingness 😉

“Got Gelatin?” posted by Angel Flinn originally on Care2.com

“Got Gelatin?” posted by Angel Flinn originally on Care2.com

This article was orginally posted in Care2.com’s Health Newsletter, “Care2 Healthy & Green Living” by Angel Flinn.

I’ll never forget the day I first learned the truth about gelatin. I was 16, and was in a café with a new friend when I offered him one of the marshmallows destined to be stirred into the hot chocolate I was about to drink.

He shook his head no, then explained, “I’m a vegetarian.”

I thought I was a vegetarian too, so I was pretty shocked to find out that my consumption of marshmallows and other candies indicated either an innocent ignorance (not anymore!) or a profound inconsistency that I was going to have to address, as I was soon to find out that gelatin(e) is derived from the collagen inside animals’ skin, bones, and connective tissues.

From the website of Gelatin Manufacturers of America:

“Gelatin is… obtained from partial hydrolysis of collagen derived from natural sources such as skin, connective tissue, and bones of animals. The raw materials used in the production of gelatin… include cattle bone, cattle hides and fresh, frozen pigskins.”

On a commercial scale, gelatin is made from by-products of the meat and leather industry. Contrary to popular belief, horns and hooves are not commonly used. Worldwide production amounts to 250,000 tons per year.

A translucent, colorless, nearly tasteless substance, gelatin is identified on coded labels by number E441. Like “natural flavors,” gelatin can be found in marshmallows, desserts like “Jell-O,” frosted cereals, some low-fat yogurt, desserts, trifles, aspic, and many confectionaries such as gummy bears and jelly babies. It may also be used as a stabilizer, thickener, or texturizer in foods such as jams, yogurt, cream cheese, and margarine.

Gelatin can be used for the clarification of juices, such as apple juice, and of vinegar, and sometimes in the clarifying of wine. (Casein, egg white and isinglass are other wine fining agents that are not vegan.) When used in this way, it does not have to be listed in the ingredients. Luckily, it’s easy enough to ask the manufacturer if any animal products were used in the clarifying process.

Household gelatin comes in the form of sheets, granules, or powder, and is used as a gelling agent, stabilizer or thickener in cooking. Alternatives are carrageenan, Irish Moss, agar-agar (seaweeds), pectin from fruit, dextrins, locust bean gum, and silica gel.

Capsules for pharmaceuticals and supplements are typically made from gelatin, in order to make them easier to swallow. Hypromellose is a vegan alternative, and due to growing concern about the use of animal products, some nutritional supplements now use this ingredient, even though it is more expensive to produce.

Something I never knew is that gelatin is used as a carrier, coating or separating agent for other substances. In soft drinks containing beta-carotene (think yellow soda), it’s likely to be gelatin that made the beta-carotene water-soluble.

Gelatin is used in such a variety of products that one can’t help but wonder if the average person knows how widespread it is, and whether the manufacturers rely on this ignorance to sell their products.

It is also found in a range of non-edible products, such as glues, nail polish remover and crêpe paper, in addition to being used in virtually all photographic films and photographic papers. Despite some efforts, no cost-effective substitutes have been found for photographic film. Digital photography is, of course, vegan, and there are some glossy papers for home photo printing that do not contain gelatin, such as most produced by Epson.

In art supplies, many watercolor papers are also sized with gelatin, and the highest-grade gelatin – made from the skins, hooves, and bones of calves – is used in gesso. Cosmetics may contain a non-gelling variant of gelatin under the name hydrolyzed collagen – another reason to buy only vegan cosmetics if you use them at all.

The existence and widespread use of gelatin is one of the more compelling reasons to check ingredients carefully when trying a new food. If you see that number E441, don’t let the coded message blind you to the truth of what is hiding behind it. Remember where gelatin comes from. Like rennet (used in cheese), it’s not vegan, it’s not vegetarian, and it’’s not acceptable.

How To Do a Detox, by Dr. Frank Lipman

How To Do a Detox, by Dr. Frank Lipman

To be completely effective, a detox program has to address both internal and external toxins. We obviously need to deal with the toxins we eat, drink, breath and put on our bodies. But, it’s just as important to address the internal toxicity created by the body as it performs it’s normal everyday functions. These biochemical, cellular, and bodily activities generate substances that need to be neutralized and or eliminated, as do the external toxins.

A comprehensive detox program must supply the appropriate nutrients to do this – and should include nutrients specifically to support the 2 most important detoxification organ systems, the liver and gastro-intestinal tract.

Although there are additional ways to boost a detox, these should be the key components of any detox.

• Decrease The Number Of Toxins Going In
Limit external toxins by decreasing or removing the amount of irritants that we put into our bodies. This means eliminating the foods that often cause sensitivities or reactions, like gluten and dairy, irritants to the gut like alcohol and caffeine and sugar and all processed foods that also trigger inflammation. For a complete list of foods I recommend you can and cannot eat while detoxing please check out my REMOVE DIET.

• Support Gastro-Intestinal Function

  • Give the digestive system a rest by decreasing the amount of food and supplying key nutrients via juices and or powders.
  • Help balance and maintain healthy flora by removing abnormal bugs in the gut. These abnormal bacteria, yeast and parasites can release toxins and overload the liver’s capacity to deal with the flood of toxins.
  • Aid digestion with digestive enzymes which assist the body to break down food properly ensuring fewer negative effects from undigested foods.
  • Add fiber to “sweep” the intestines. Fiber promotes the elimination of toxins and also binds to toxins, which helps to prevent their absorption. Dietary fiber is also metabolized by gut bacteria into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which feed the cells lining the intestines and thereby support cellular integrity, therefore decreasing inflammation.

•  Support Liver Function
Assist liver function, as it is the main organ involved in transforming toxins into metabolites that are easier to excrete. Nutritionally supporting the liver boosts it’s function during detox preventing the accumulation of toxic products in the tissues.

comprehensive detox program must include the targeted nutrition you need to boost your bodies own detox system. Supplying the right mix of nutrients to balance the body and optimize function is essential for an effective detox.
