Expanding Families; Welcoming a new sibling
Welcoming a new sibling into the family can be as easy or as difficult as mom and dad influence it to be.
This is not to say that mom and dad have complete control over how existing/older siblings shall respond to a new bundle of joy coming home, however, they definitely have a MAJOR Influence.
To create a major POSITIVE influence get your existing/older children INVOLVED in the process from pregnancy to birth to care-taking at home.
Let them feel that they too are response able– have the ability to choose how they shall respond to their new sibling with the understanding that their choice shall have a very ‘real affect’ upon their sibling and thus to make that choice one of love- for the care and well being of their sibling.
This can be accomplished through very large and……very small gestures, such as brainstorming new names for the new babe, lending their ideas regarding decorating the new baby room, buying toys, to empowering them with the KNOWledge that they are an ‘important role model’ in their sibling’s life.
The main point IS keep them involved and whilst so DOing maintain a positive attitude regarding – all talk with respect to the new babe coming home should be uplifting to your child, consciously including them in any story being woven. 😀
