During our first trip to Kauai, Mark, Destin (our then 8 year old son) and I had an EXTRAordinary experience on the beach one day. We had our first encounter with an endangered species called, Hawaiian Monk Seals. The seals love to warm themselves in the afternoon sun on the sun-drenched sand. They haul themselves up out of the ocean to nap for hours on end. They’re huge, resembling black lava rocks from a distance. They appear motionless… (more…)
