Tarot decks were invented in Italy in the 1430’s by adding to the existing four-suited card deck, a fifth suit of 21 specially illustrated cards called ” trionfi ” ( triumphs ), and an odd card called ” il matto ” ( the fool ). All 22 special ” triumph or trump cards ” are today known as the ” Major Arcana “, with the numbered cards called the ” Minor Arcana “, and the Tarot cards as a whole referred to as ” The Arcana “.
The cards were originally used to play a bridge-like game known as ” tarocchi “, popular at the time among nobles and other leisure lovers. According to tarot historian Gertrude Moakley, the cards’ fanciful images—from the Fool to Death—were inspired by the costumed figures who participated in carnival parades.
Pamela Colman Smith was the Artist and Occultist who designed the very first Iconic Tarot Deck.
The early French occultists claimed that tarot cards had esoteric links to ancient Egypt, the Kabbalah, Indic Tantra, and/or the I Ching. The popularization of esoteric tarot, which would be Tarot as a divination tool, started with Antoine Court and Jean-Baptiste Alliette (Etteilla) in Paris during the 1780s, using the Tarot of Marseilles.
